Why Wrightsville Beach Made List of the World’s 20 Best Surf Towns

National Geographic Magazine named Wrightsville Beach, N.C. to it’s list of the World’s 20 Best Surf Towns! Here’s why:

In the last 20 years, Wrightsville Beach has undergone quite a few changes. Thanks to the completion of I-40, just 23 years ago, the sleepy little beach village became easily accessible to thousands of folks who’ve now made it a top choice for day-tripping. What has also become apparent is that the 4-mile stretch of beach boasts some pretty amazing surf breaks. The sandy white strand of Wrightsville Beach is heralded these days as a preferred destination for surfers. When conditions are right, it’s known for pumping out sizeable A-frames and glassy barrels. Wrightsville Beach has also gained fame as an ideal spot for beginning surfers. Currently, there are several well-established surf schools on the island, catering to all ages and skill levels.

According to the author of the National Geographic magazine article, Tetsuhiko Endo, there are several components a town must possess to be considered for inclusion on the “best surf towns” list. They are:
The nearly magical sum of consistent waves, inviting accommodations, friendly locals, fun nightlife, delicious food, and plenty of activities should the ocean go flat.
Considering those requirements, it’s no wonder Wrightsville Beach made the list!

If you are thinking of paddling out and trying your hand at the “Sport of Kings,” it’s always a good idea to take a few lessons from an experienced surf instructor. Unlike hitting the gym or the tennis court, the conditions on the water are subject to change hourly. Until you become skilled at analyzing the tide, wind, current, and potential wave height, it is better to rely on the advice of those in the know. There are four surf shops on the island, and this is the best place to start for information on rentals, lessons, surf schools, and surf zones.

Happy Surfing:)
