Surfer’s Healing Camp for Autism, Wrightsville Beach

Surfers Healing

Wrightsville Beach is proud to host one of the Surfer’s Healing camps during their nationwide summer tour. Surfer’s Healing is a non-profit organization seeking to enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing. They travel the U.S. throughout the summer visiting various beach towns from Puerto Rico to Hawaii, Malibu to Rhode Island. These camps are extremely special and truly enrich the lives of the people who get to participate.

The Wrightsville Beach Surfer’s Healing camp will take place on August 22, 2011. A typical day at a Surfer’s Healing camp starts with a check in, getting suited up with a life vest, and getting partnered with a volunteer surfer. The campers have to get set up with the correct positioning on the surfboard. They will then be surfing on the board with their volunteer. Students who are more comfortable in the ocean can even get one-on-one surfing lessons so they can ride the waves on their own.

For people and families of those affected by autism, the Surfer’s Healing camp can be transformative. They can go back year after year and many families form a community around Surfer’s Healing. It is a great day for the campers, families, volunteers, and viewers.
