Carolina Cup SUP 2013

Paddlers from up and down the Eastern Seaboard are gearing up for what promises to be one of the most well attended SUP events in the country. Last year, over 400 contestants tested their prowess in both the inland and offshore waters around Wrightsville Beach. SUP enthusiasts from as far away as California, Canada, and Puerto Rico participated.

The Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club and event organizer is pleased to announce that this year’s Carolina Cup will take place from Thursday April 25th through Sunday the 28th. All of the action starts at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort.

Here’s a look at the four races. Please keep in mind that several age divisions have been established, and cash prizes will be awarded for the Carolina Cup’s most challenging contest, the Graveyard Race.

Harbor Island Fun Race – This 3.5 mile trek takes paddlers under all three bridges that span the ICW, Banks Channel, and the inland waterways along Wrightsville Beach. A pleasant and fairly easy trip, this is a nice way to spend an hour or so!

Money Island Race – Often compared to a 10K, this one’s for intermediate and advanced SUP-ers. The 6-mile course around Money Island can prove tricky, thanks to wind, current, and boat traffic.

Graveyard Race – This demanding 12-mile race is definitely not for the faint of heart. Paddlers will start and finish ocean side at the Blockade Runner Resort. Typical challenges include, ocean swells, wind, current, and boat traffic. For this race, everyone is required to wear a leash and a life jacket.

Kid’s Race – Please check the event website for more information, since this race is still in the planning stage.

With race age divisions set for 12 and up, Junior-16+, Men, Women, and 50+, this is definitely a family friendly affair and an excellent excuse for a 4-day weekend at beautiful Wrightsville Beach!
