10 Ideas for Mother’s Day on Wrightsville Beach

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so go ahead and plan to give your mom the royal treatment! The holiday, which will mark its 99th year on May 12th, was established to commemorate motherhood and acknowledge all of those “honorary moms” out there. Since a typical May day along the coast of southeastern North Carolina can often be quite spectacular, Wrightsville Beach is a great choice for a celebration destination.

Not sure where to begin? Here are 10 suggestions sure to warm her heart!

1. Invite mom on her special date in a uniquely coastal way. Paint a message on a shell, make a card from a photographed message in the sand, or put a note in a bottle she’ll find first thing Sunday morning.

2. Treat her to breakfast or brunch – is she crazy about the coffee and delicious muffins at Café del Mar or does she crave the shrimp and grits at Causeway? Get there early to put your name down and enjoy the atmosphere along the beach or waterway.

3. After breakfast, she’ll be ready for a boat ride for sure! There are scenic water tours and, if she’s the sporty type, kayak or SUP rentals. Regardless of which type of cruise she’d prefer, exploring Banks Channel is always a great way to spend some time.

4. Want to give her the perfect gift for today and beyond? You can’t go wrong with a new beach chair, sun hat, sunscreen and lip balm, plus plenty of VIP reading material- you know -Vogue, In-Style, and People!

5. Whether it’s on the beach or at the park, what could be nicer than a picnic? It will be up to the hosts to create the picnic of mom’s dreams with all of her favorites. Don’t forget a diversion for the kids, like sand toys or a Frisbee and perhaps mom’s favorite cold beverage?

7. Since not everyone is a fan of just lazing on the beach, now is an excellent opportunity to introduce mom to something that may be on her “to-do” list anyway. Consider a side outing or lesson for the afternoon such as surfing, SUPing, sport fishing, kite boarding or a tennis lesson at the park.

8. As the day winds down, and if the kids are agreeable, late afternoon is a lovely time to partake in everyone’s favorite WB pastime – walking The Loop.

9. After all that activity, mom will definitely need an ice cream cone, and luckily, there are several places on the island that serve hand-dipped cones, cups or frozen treats on a stick.

10. If the queen and her court are up for it, watching the sun set is a magical way to end the day. It can be especially nice when viewed over a scrumptious dinner from one of the island’s fine dining establishments or from the deck of a beach house…that just happens to be for sale…Hey? Isn’t mom’s birthday coming up anyway?
