Plastic Bag Reduction Campaign in Wrightsville Beach

The natural beauty that makes the Cape Fear Coast such a treasure is something most of us take for granted… Groups like the Surfrider Foundation are keenly aware that if we do not all join together and take immediate steps to preserve and conserve our beaches, rivers, estuaries, wetlands, and woodlands, our coastal environment will be forever impacted.

That is why the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation recently made an impassioned request to residents and visitors of New Hanover County to support the Plastic Bag Reduction Campaign. Specifically targeted are the small, single-use, lightweight plastic bags used by grocery and retail stores.
“Reducing single-use plastic bags protects our marine life and reduces our dependency on foreign oil. It’s a win, win, win,” said Ethan Crouch, Chairman of the Surfrider Foundation.
Resolutions of this type have already been passed at UNC-Wilmington and Pleasure Island. Other U.S. metro areas, which have taken a stand and either banned or leveled fees on the use of such plastic bags are Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
